An Acquired Taste

Reese is clearly not a Sonic Youth fan. I was listening to Experimental Jet Set, Trash & No Star when Reese said, “What is that noise?!”

“It’s music.”

“No it isn’t!”

I guess he isn’t the first to say that…

The answer to that is yes, it is tasteful delightful noise.

Admittedly Sonic Youth have their ups and downs. I saw them first live open for the Beastie Boys. Admittedly I found it hard to decipher any music (in ‘92 both guitarists had their guitars on the ground and were wacking them with drumsticks) and I was there primarily for the Beastie Boys. I quite like Sonic Youth now, and I would appreciate their live performance a lot more.

I hear ya, Josh. I get that most of the time. Recently, my 2.5 year old daughter jumped in the car with me. As I started the car, the DVD player turned on and started off where it left last time, “Trilogy” from Daydream Nation. My daughter looked at the DVD player with a shocked look. But get this, she likes “And you will know us by the trail of dead”. Go figure.

My son is strickly a Van Morrison and Aerosmith fan (the early stuff). Occasoinally he’ll go for a little Wilco or Son Volt. He cries whenever he hears anything else. He doesn’t talk yet he is only 9 months. I haven’t tried the Sonic Youth on him yet. Ten bucks says he’ll cry

My son likes Sonic Youth. You wonder where you went wrong. I guess all you can do is hope.

He sounds just like his GrandDad on his mother’s side.
