Suspended in Ether

Six things that seemed strangely hyper-real during the course of one day:

  1. The incredibly high-pitched voice of the male attendant at the assisted living center who called at 3am
  2. The sound of the engine as I drove 85 mph
  3. The flickering light in the hospital parking garage
  4. The feel of the side of the green truck that I trailed my fingers across as it passed me in the garage
  5. The toilet seat covers in the hospital bathroom that someone had labeled “free cowboy hats”
  6. The beeping of the oxygen monitor

I found this written on a scrap of paper. I wrote it a few months ago after rushing my grandma to the hospital in the middle of the night and spending a long day there with her.
