Suspended in Ether
Six things that seemed strangely hyper-real during the course of one day:
- The incredibly high-pitched voice of the male attendant at the assisted living center who called at 3am
- The sound of the engine as I drove 85 mph
- The flickering light in the hospital parking garage
- The feel of the side of the green truck that I trailed my fingers across as it passed me in the garage.
- The toilet seat covers in the hospital bathroom that someone had labeled “free cowboy hats”
- The beeping of the oxygen monitor
I found this written on a scrap of paper. I wrote it a few months ago after rushing my grandma to the hospital in the middle of the night and spending a long day there with her.
